Syme Woolner Neighbourhood & Family Centre is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, adults, seniors, and vulnerable individuals through programs that promote food security, community engagement, education, health, and social inclusion.
We are seeking a dedicated Volunteer Financial Coordinator to support the organization’s financial administration, budgeting, reporting, and compliance activities. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical nonprofit financial management experience while contributing to an organization making a meaningful impact in the community.
Position Summary
The Volunteer Financial Coordinator will support the Executive Director and leadership team by assisting with financial administration, bookkeeping oversight, budgeting, grant reporting, and financial analysis. Working closely with senior leadership, the volunteer will help strengthen internal financial controls, improve reporting processes, and support sound financial stewardship across the organization.
This role is ideal for accounting, finance, business administration, MBA, CPA students or internationally trained accounting and finance professionals seeking Canadian nonprofit experience.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Administration
- Assist with maintaining accurate financial records and supporting bookkeeping activities
- Review invoices, purchase orders, receipts, and expense documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable tracking.
Monitor outstanding invoices and vendor payments. - Support monthly bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations.
Budgeting & Financial Reporting
- Assist in preparing annual budgets and budget revisions.
- Monitor program expenditures against approved budgets.
- Prepare budget variance reports and financial summaries.
- Support cash flow monitoring and financial forecasting.
- Assist with preparing financial reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Grant & Funder Compliance
- Assist with preparing financial reports required by government funders, foundations, and donors.
- Monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with funding agreements.
- Support documentation for audits and funding reviews.
- Maintain organized financial files and supporting documentation.
Financial Analysis
- Analyze financial trends and identify variances.
- Assist with cost analysis and budget planning.
- Prepare spreadsheets and dashboards for leadership decision-making.
- Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost savings.
Governance & Audit Support
- Prepare financial information for Board and Finance Committee meetings.
- Assist with audit preparation and document collection.
- Support implementation of financial policies and internal controls.
- Maintain confidential financial records and documentation.
Administrative Support
- Maintain financial databases and filing systems.
- Prepare correspondence related to financial matters.
- Assist with special financial projects and organizational initiatives.
- Perform other duties that support the Finance and Executive Office.
Qualifications
We welcome applications from individuals with backgrounds in:
- Accounting, Finance, Economics, Financial Management, CPA Students or Candidates
- Business Administration, Commerce, MBA Students
- Internationally Educated Accountants and Finance Professionals with relevant experience
Preferred qualifications include:
- Knowledge of bookkeeping principles and financial reporting.
- Experience preparing budgets and financial reconciliations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel or Power BI skills.
- Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage50 or similar) is an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
